iPad2 Security Flaw (please read!!)

Lots of our clients deal with sensitive information on a day to day basis, so this flaw is a big deal. By using the Smart Cover flaw, someone can unlock your iPad and see / interact with the last program you had open if you left it up. So if that’s Words With Friends, not a big deal, but if it’s your email account…

Apple’s iCloud

In a kind of big news story, the Blackberry service for most users was out for quite some time over the last few days. For some this disruption of service isn’t a deal breaker, but for a lot of users the outage affected how they do their jobs and day to day tasks.

So what’s in the new iPhone? A lot, actually:

Faster processor (better performance)
HD video
Voice recognition (SIRI)
An 8mp camera
iCloud integration

And more… So, is now the time? Tens of millions have already made the switch…

Working Remotely

We get this question a lot, and people are surprised when we say it’s not only pretty straightforward a lot of the time, but that we do it every day!

Between the cloud, Microsoft’s built in remote desktop features, and other remote access tools (VPNs, etc..) remote access to your data has become a pretty common thing. BACKUP!!!

We know, backups are boring. Nobody wants to talk about them, ever. They are the laundry, the baseboard cleaning, the oil change of the computer world. You KNOW they need to be done and are immensely important, but sometimes it just slips your mind. So…

Just a reminder. Backup your computer. If you aren’t, let us know. If you’re even a smidge unsure, let us know. Heck, even if you’re 100% positive you’re backed up, it doesn’t hurt to check again.

We are implementing a new report as part of our system that will list what WE are sure of in regards to backups, the date we were sure of it, and other critical information. Our hope is that people will receive these and see any differences between what they thought they knew, and what we know, and we can get together and clear up and misunderstandings.

So please, let’s chat about backups. I promise it won’t be bad, we will make it quick, and you can have the peace of mind that if something does happen that you’ll be protected.

Some New Bad Malware

There is a new batch of Malware on the rise that we talked about briefly in a recent blog post. But as we see more and more infections we want to give you the skinny on what happens.

The new variants load up before your operating system, so it is mostly invisible. It sits in what is known as the Master Boot Record and is able to hide its infection. This causes for some pretty nasty problems, as running Malwarebytes or other software doesn’t show an infection, but when we rewrite the Master Boot Record and run another scan the infection shows up.

So just because your scanner turns up clean does NOT mean you’re free and clear. If you continue to have problems you could have one of these stealth infections, and they’re almost impossible to detect.

My Foray With A MacBook

I’m a Windows guy. Since MS DOS, Windows 3.1 (and 3.11 for Workgroups!) I’ve been working in and around IT. From small firms to IBM, my jobs have been pretty Microsoft centric. That was just the way of life.

Well life, she is a changin’. Despite my best efforts, I couldn’t help but notice the uprising of Apple and their product lines across the board. From their sleek MacBook Air to the iPad and iPhone, it seems like the buzzword over the last couple of years (and longer) has been Apple. And while I was versed in their general usage for my day to day duties, I had never sat down and made myself use one as my primary computer.

Until July. Now I’m not gonna go all Apple fanboy on you, or make crazy claims and list the hundreds of differences. But I do want to say this… It’s not bad. I like it. If you’re thinking of getting one, maybe you should. Is it a flawless transition? Nope. Am I still working out some quirks? Sure. But I’ve had fun doing it, and the learning curve is less than I thought it would be.

So hey, give it a shot, and if you want to know more about my move just ask. Its been a fun experience.
