Some of you may have seen different advertisements for Verizon’s new 4G hotspot. We recently purchased one for trail purposes and came away very impressed. When in network, the speeds are amazing. In fact, when preforming initial tests on the device, E-Roots’s own Clay Foody exclaimed “Holy crap” when he performed the first speed test.
When inside the limited but rapidly growing 4G coverage area, download speeds range from 5 – 15 mbps. To put that in perspective, typical DSL service offers about 3 mbps, while cable speeds reach the 5 – 10 mbps range. Additionally, the device allows for up to 5 remote connected devices.
However, there are a couple drawbacks so don’t cancel your home internet quite yet.
First, the service is throttled at 5 GB per month for $50. This is more than enough for your typical home business user, but if your Hulu queue has more than a couple TV shows in it, it probably won’t be enough.
The other drawback is more human in nature. Because your high-speed internet access is wrapped up in a device the size of a deck of cards, it is entirely possible to physcially lose your internet.
“Honey, have you seen the internet?”
“Have you checked your pants pocket?”
